    Mead Family gives thanks

    Editor, The Sun:

Team “Mead’s Irish Eyes/Action Bookkeeping” would like to thank all those who donated to the 2009 Memory Walk, which took place on Sept. 19 at Delaware Park in Buffalo.

Their goal of $1,500 was surpassed with donations totaling over $2,200, which was made possible through all your support to this most worthy cause.

As the major fund-raiser for the Western New York Alzheimer’s Association, the Memory Walk brought in contributions of over $151,000.

Alzheimer’s and dementia affect 35 million worldwide. In the United States alone, it has stricken 5.3 million Americans which triple health care costs to the tune of $148 billion each year to Medicare, Medicaid and businesses.

Let’s hope a cure will be found soon to eradicate this debilitating disease.

    Special program a great success

    Editor, The Sun:

The Hamburg United Methodist Church monthly Respite Program for the memory impaired hit the ground running last week! We welcomed seven guests that enjoyed doing puzzles, playing games, signing along with the piano and a delightful lunch.

Thank you to all that helped to make it happen: Stan Hooper for the funding, the generous and lively volunteers, UMWs Sarah Circle for providing lunch, the Alzheimer’s Association for the volunteers training and the Hamburg Sun for the wonderful article they ran explaining the program.

Caregivers thanked us over and over for giving them a bit of time to themselves without worry. They expressed what a much needed program this was for them!

The volunteers stayed afterwards enthusiastically sharing their favorite parts of the day and already signing up for next month!

One volunteer shared that it was a treasured opportunity to honor her mom who had Alzheimer’s disease. We did indeed have fun, along with our guests, who really enjoyed the change of scenery and socialization.

If you care for someone with a memory impairment and would like your loved one to attend our program, call 941-5703.

We offer the program at the Hamburg United Methodist Church on the second Wednesday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 116 Union St.

There is no charge, is handicapped accessible, lunch is provided and all are welcome.
We also welcome volunteers that feel called to lend a hand!

Thank you again to all — we’re rolling!

    Students are commended

    Editor, The Sun:

Many thanks to Chris Dudek and his Participation in Government and Peace Club students at Hamburg High School.

This spirited and generous group of young adults recently raked leaves for the residents of North Street in the Village of Hamburg one day after school.

They were a tremendous help to the homeowners and a terrific example of our youth being engaged in a positive and unselfish endeavor.

We sincerely appreciate their enthusiasm, effort and hard work.

    Farrell will be sorely missed

    Editor, The Sun:

Sometimes in our lives we have the rare opportunity to cross paths with someone who really impacts our lives.

The Town of Hamburg, its’ senior citizens and Western New York as a whole will never forget the contributions and dedication of John Farrell, who oversaw the Senior Services Department in our own for over three decades.

I had that experience during my 30-plus year friendship with John Farrell. For almost half of those 30-plus yeas, I have been a student of John’s weekly Bible study. I don’t even like to use the words Bible study because they were far more than that. John brought the true living God into our lives.

He explained in great detail, the nature, character and commands of our creator week in and week out, month after month, and year after year, all in small bite sized pieces that I could understand. He shared the wonders of the Gospel and the course to eternal salvation to all who had an ear to listen. He gave himself unending towards this cause.

I spend most of my day listening to various Bible teachers via radio, CD, and MP3 but none have ever filled my plate so completely as John.

What was so unique about this true man of God was his constant temperament. Whatever issues he may have had on his mind throughout his busy day, he left them at the door when he entered into God’s work.

The great thing about John was that it seemed like he was always doing God’s work. I rarely ever witnessed him stressed out, short of time or rushed to meet some deadline. He always had time for everyones problems and questions.

Sometimes we disagreed on things and most of those times he would gently steer me back on course.
I trusted him completely because I knew deep down he was a true man of God. There was nothing that he did that was for his own glory or pride.

I can’t imagine just how many other lives this saint touched in similar ways. I’m confident they are beyond measure. But Jesus I’m quite sure has them all written in his book and is now sharing with John, the real impact of this good and faithful servant.

I’ve always felt great anguish and sorrow when someone close to me would pass away.
At this time however, I feel reservedly joyous. I am so honored to have known John Farrell. I am so filled with peace knowing that he is receiving his just and eternal award. He gave me a new Christian standard to strive for and the bar truly has been raised.

Bible Fellowship Church, the church that John started, although in its infancy, will grow strong because of the roots that john planted and nurtured deep into each members heart. In deserved honor to John, we should accept nothing less.
