For at least one night in her life Kalyn Compeau knew what it was like to be a hero and it was glorious.
Compeau, an eighth grader, made an impressive varsity debut when she scored the game-winning goal as Tonawanda defeated rival Alden, 1-0, in their Section VI Class B pre-quarterfinal game that took place at Clinton H. Small Stadium on Oct. 28.
“It felt awesome,” Compeau said with a big smile. “The rush, it was great.”
Thought of by many as the best pure athlete, male or female, in the middle school age group Compeau had a standout season with the Lady Warriors junior varsity squad before receiving her call-up.
While most teams generally operate with the rule of thumb that late season JV call-ups ride the bench and rarely if ever see playing time during a sectional playoff game Compeau saw a sizeable amount of quality minutes.
“I didn’t think I’d play as much as I (did) but I gave it my best when I was out there,” Compeau said.
Waging two very intense division battles against Alden this season every girl on the Warriors roster knew how physical the Bulldogs lineup is. But to her credit Compeau didn’t back away from any physical contact. All the while displaying her God given skill for the game.
“Kalyn Compeau is one of those girls that you go ‘wow she really has something special and she is going to be a great contributor to the varsity team,” said tri-captain Tara Radkiewicz. “Only being in the eighth grade and scoring on a team we have fought so hard against all year is really great, I’m really proud of her and the rest of the team.”
Though secure in her ability Compeau, like any player in their first varsity appearance had that mix of excitement and anxiety coursing through her body at first.
So when did the butterflies vanish?
“Pretty much after I scored the goal I felt fine,” Compeau said.
As the Warriors huddled after the win over Alden that night Radkiewicz yelled “Team kiss for Kalyn” as the rest of the team gave her a round of applause.
It was Compeau first shining moment as a varsity player-but definitely not her last.
“That was awesome!” Compeau said of the applause. “That made me feel great.”
