There was rain. There was snow. Heck, there was even some hail.
Bre Catipovic scored one of the two goals for MSM.
And on this day, there was a little thunder too.
Mt. St. Mary Academy pulled off one of the biggest upsets of Monsignor Martin Athletic Association soccer playoffs as they defeated Nardin Academy, 2-0, to advance to the championship game against Nichols at noon this Sunday at St. Joe’s.
“We have played ball control a little more the last three games,” stated MSM coach Mario Fernandez. “The key for us was not letting them control the midfield.”
Nardin controlled the game early in the first half as they were able to keep the ball pinned in the end of the Thunder. But, the Thunder’s defense played well and kept the shots to a small amount.
And even though the Gators had the control, all it took was one play to change the entire momentum of the game.
A simple clear by the MSM defense turned into a great scoring opportunity for Bre Catipovic and the senior didn’t disappoint.
Catipovic took the ball and went to the left drawing the defender and goalkeeper (Tori Christ) before sliding the ball back to the right and into the open net.
From there, it seemed the heavily favored Gators became a little tight as their passes weren’t connecting and the Thunder started to gain more of the possession.
“I think they (Nardin) felt they were going to beat us,” stated Fernandez. “We have come a long way the second half of the season.”
Even though the score read 2-0, the game wasn’t that close – especially in the second half. The Thunder controlled the play for the much of the second half and if Catipovic could have cashed in on her numerous chances the game wouldn’t have come down to the last few minutes.
Catipovic had at least three golden opportunities to put the game away, but Christ came up big – denying her every time.
“It could have been higher,” said Fernandez. “But, give credit to Nardin they are a very, very good team.
It wasn’t until the 70th minute when the Thunder could finally celebrate the victory.
MSM sophomore Gabriella Buzzelli sprinted down the far right side and unleashed a bullet that just bent in enough to get inside the left post and beat the keeper Christ, who had no chance on the play.
“Gabriella has a great long shot and she scored two or three goals like that during the season,” Fernandez said. “She is only a sophomore, so she will be my striker for next season.”
Up next for the Thunder is the final against Nichols, a team MSM has struggled against this season.
“Nichols is in another league,” said Fernandez. “They are stronger than Nardin. It’s going to be tough. If I was a betting guy, I would say Nichols has a better chance, but we are going to give it a shot.”
Metro Source will be all over the finals on Sunday as beat reporter Dave Ricci will be covering the MSM-Nichols finals. Check back on Sunday to read all about the game.
Also, Metro will be sending a photographer to get the great game shots everybody is accustomed to seeing throughout the season in our papers.
