October’s Student of the Month: Katelin Blackburn
Catching Katelin Blackburn during some down time is challenging, if not impossible. The Kenmore East High School senior has much more than a full schedule; between her heavy class load, her volunteer work, her involvement in school clubs and activities and her competitive dance schedule, there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day for all that she does.
“Sleep is definitely not high on my list of priorities,” she says with a laugh.
There’s no way it can be.
She doesn’t even have a free period in school, as her schedule is packed with the classes that have earned her Excellence in Social Studies, English, Math, Foreign Language, and Science awards, as well as the Wellesley Book Award and the Wells College 21st Century Leadership Award - that includes a $40,000 scholarship.
But academic awards isn’t all that she’s about.
When she’s not in school or studying, she’s often volunteering. As a young student at St. John the Baptist, she learned the value of giving back to her community, and continues to do just that.
She volunteers at St. Luke’s Mission, at St. John’s Lawn Fete, at Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen. And she does it year around, in between service work in her school.
That part of her schedule includes planning fundraisers for Student Congress (where she is Vice President of the Class of 2010), to being co-president of the Race Unity Club, a club that strives to bridge the differences between different cultures, and a club that she worked to bring to the school.
She’s also responsible for the KE Connection Crew, a club that conducts a freshman orientation for those entering Kenmore East. As a student counselor, she helps make the transition between middle and high school a little bit easier for incoming freshman, and provides invaluable guidance to those looking ahead to their high school years.
More than 20 hours a week is taken up by her true love – dance. Blackburn has been a competitive dancer at Lorraine Goddard Dance Studio for 10 years. Performing everything from tap and ballet to jazz and hip-hop, she’s a member of a dance team that has won national awards, competing in cities across the country.
“They’re like my second family there, I spend so much time with them,” she says. “I love dancing; it’s my passion.”
And she even uses dancing as way to give back. In Dancers Give Back, fellow athletes from across Western New York perform in an annual fundraiser that benefits research for leukemia and lymphoma, a cause that’s particularly close to her heart.
Backburn lost her uncle to the disease, and since then she has participated in a number of different fundraisers in his honor – including organizing a team for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk.
She also finds to stay at the top of her studies, ranking first in her class of 257, even as she encourages others to do their best in her role as cheerleading team captain.
“You can’t do anything halfway,” says Blackburn. “It’s all about time management and priorities. I might not get to go out with my friends some nights, but I can do that on the weekends. It’s about opening doors and keeping them open.”
Living in the moment and looking to the future, Blackburn will be pursuing a career in sports medicine. She says that her own tendency to get injured has much to do with her interest in the health professions, but unmistakable is her desire to help and to heal others.
She’s already been doing just that for her entire life, and will undoubtedly continue to do so.
The Metro Group is proud to honor Katelin Blackburn as October’s Student of the Month. Nominations for November’s Student of the Month are due on Monday, Oct. 23. For more information on submitting a student for consideration, email ddurkee@metrowny.com.
