December 14, 1939
Eight Springville youths have joined some branch of the National Defense Service during the past few months. They are Eugene Baker, Harry Rucker, George Lohrey, Fred Allen, Army; Harry Danielson, Coast Guard; James Kessler and Bernard Allen, Navy.
William Ellis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ellis, will leave Syracuse University campus Saturday to spend the Christmas holidays at home.
Mr. and Mrs. Orio Wolfe and family of Hamburg were Sunday guests of her mother, Mrs. Anna Jackson.
At a meeting of the local Red Cross held Monday evening, the following officers were elected: President, Graham Smith; Vice President, Mrs. Orlon Stearns; Secretary, Mrs. Carleton Gray; Treasurer, Clyde Ellis.
SIXTY YEARS AGO
December 8, 1949
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Underberg, daughter Agnes, and son Joseph, left Friday on a motor trip to Iowa, where they will visit relatives.
Leonard Bifarella, Edwin Kruse, Leo Perason, Kenneth Hooper, Dick Smith, LaVern Smith, Francis Freelock, John Hunchar attended the Cleveland-Buffalo football game in Cleveland on Sunday.
Bob Harris, a graduate of Griffith Institute, is a candidate for Center on the Alfred University freshman basketball team this year.
Wilber Coons, who has been a patient at Chaffee Hospital, is home again.
Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Fisher of Clarence were guests of Mrs. Sheldon Elderkin Sunday.
Joyce Andrews is a patient at Chaffee Hospital.
We received a card last week that Mr. and Mrs. Roland B. King attended the “Welcome Traveler” radio program, Hotel Sherman, Chicago, November 30th.
Mrs. James Gray has returned from a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Donald E. Tobin, and family at Ontario, and Mr. and Mrs. Alson Parker at Rochester.
Dr. Gregory Stanbro of Oklahoma visited his brother Frederick H. Stanbro, and family from Friday until Sunday. Mrs. Lutie Dewey has gone to Albion to spend the winter with her daughter, Mrs. Kerma Clark.
FIFTY YEARS AGO

Two spring like days, Saturday and Sunday, found many, many people playing golf at the Springville Country Club.
Springville and several nearby communities will become a little “closer” next year. New York Telephone Company manager announced that Gowanda, Cattaraugus, Otto and East Otto will be brought into Springville’s local calling area at the time dial service is introduced in Gowanda.

The G.I. Music Department is pleased to announce that three high school music students have been chosen to perform at the Annual State Music Conference, to be held at the Concord Hotel, Monticello, New York. Those chosen were Patricia Walck, daughter of Mrs. Lucille Walck; Mary Koningisor, daughter of Mrs. Eleanor Koningisor; and Paul Seymour, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Seymour.
Dr. Kenneth J. Knepflar, a Speech Pathologist in Pasadena, California, recently began a professional lecture tour with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Knepflar in Buffalo, Michigan and Chicago.

Springville-Griffith’s Chris George is among 10 Western New York high school football players named as finalists for the Connolly Cup award presented by the Riverside Athletic Club.
A public hearing has been scheduled by the Town of Concord Planning Board and National Fuel Gas for Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. to get citizen input on the proposed compressor station National Fuel Gas is hoping to build on Genesee Road.

Development of two 40-unit apartment complexes near Barnstead Drive received conditional approval Tuesday from the Springville Village Planning Board, following a public hearing during which several neighbors voiced concerns. Carl Emerling, owner of the nearby Emerling Ford Mercury dearlership, and Kevin G. Maxwell of Vinwell Construction, Inc. head the ownership group which will develop the project in two phases.
On Nov. 10, area veterans participated in the Veteran’s Day assembly held at the Springville Elementary School. The assembly was meant to teach children about the meaning of Veteran’s Day.
Linda Reehling, R.N., MS, the current director of nursing at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, has been elected as president-elect of the WNY Organization of Nurse Executives.
