    Mr. and Mrs. George Wyatt, Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Wyatt and Frank Wyatt will leave Monday for California, where they will spend the winter months.

    Miss Mildred Shamel has returned to Ithaca College, Ithaca.

    Mrs. Robert R. Comstock and Miss Margaret Comstock left Saturday for Northampton, Massachusetts, where Margaret entered Smith College for her Sophomore year.

    Mrs. Kenneth Russell and Rev. and Mrs. Bruce Lambert attended the regional conference at the Prospect Avenue Baptist Church in Buffalo Monday.

    SIXTY YEARS AGO

    September 22, 1949

    Wilson F. Graff was among 43 students at Chevrolet’s famous Post-Graduate School of Modern Merchandising and Management in Detroit, Michigan.

    The 1949-50 school year is off to a good start with a record-breaking enrollment of 1,010 pupils. the three rural schools bring the enrollment up to 1,050.

    Corp. James H. Morley, who has been in Okinawa for the past year and a half, arrived home last Wednesday to spend a forty-day leave with his father, James N. Morley.

    Miss Claudette Spas was chosen “Miss Chaffee Hospital ’59” at the Chaffee Hospital on September 29th.

    The dedication of the new Biological Lab went well last Friday with Commissioner of Public Health giving the address. Many were in attendance.

    FORTY YEARS AGO

    September 25, 1969

    Army Captain John P. Barie, son of Kenneth G. Barie of Edgewood Drive, Springville, received the Bronze Star Medal for outstanding meritorious service while serving as Chief of the Major Items Branch, Firepower and Mobility Division, U.S. Army Inventory Control Center in Long Binh, Vietnam.

    Millard Brown, an employee of Winsmith and a regular donor at Red Cross Bloodmobiles has donated six gallons of blood since December 1959.

    At a special Board of Directors meeting of the Springville Country Club, the following were elected: President, Thomas Hughes; Vice President, Richard Fancher; Secretary, Richard Nunn; Treasurer, Ed Kruse; elected to the Board were Richard Feldman, Richard Fancher, Robert Hayes, Thomas Hughes and Roger McGahey.

    TWENTY YEARS AGO

    September 28, 1989

    Sister Marie Julianne Farrington, the new superior general of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, was expected to take up residence Sept. 20 at the order’s headquarters in Namur, Belgium. She formally said good bye last week to friends and neighbors in Colden as she prepared to become the first American head of an international religious order.

    Kay Duffy School of Dance recently opened its new studio at 65 East Main Street. The new studio has a 25-by-50 foot completely refinished, refinished dance floor and huge mirrors installed on every wall, giving the studio a professional atmosphere.

    September 23, 1999

    Former Springville-Griffith Institute School Superintendent Dr. Dean Bettker died Sept. 12, the Amityville, Long Island School Board announced in a brief state. Dr. Bettker, 58, was S-GI superintendent from July 1995 to June 1997.

    Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred J. Sion of Lawtons celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently.Sion and the former Alma Wittmeyer were married August 6, 1949 at St. Mary’s Church, New Oregon.

    Art and Delores Lux of West Valley celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently. Lux and the former Delores Hemmerling were married August 11, 1949 in St. Aloysius Church, Springville.

    Springville and West Valley football teams were both defeated last weekend. Springville lost to Southwestern, 42-12 and West Valley lost to Randolph, 21-0.
