Pick up your guitar, your drumsticks, or a violin, stretch your fingers or get ready to sing.
If you’re sitting in front of the television getting ready to play the video game called “Rock Band,” “Let’s do it for real this time,” said Alex Sabuda, owner of Alex’s East Main Music Studio of Springville.
Sabuda said with proper instruction, anyone can learn how to become a successful musician.
“If you get the right instruction, there’s no telling what you can do,” he added.
Alex’s East Main Music Studio offers instruction on various instruments such as drums, electric bass, guitar, piano and voice.
“Everything builds on everything else,” said Charles Porter, a 2000 graduate of Springville-Griffith Institute High School and East Concord resident.
The music studio is located at 9 East Main Street in Springville on the second floor.
Instructors at Alex’s East Main Music Studio want to encourage everyone to come and check out the music lessons that they offer.
“With kids out of school (this summer), it’s a great time to start. They have more time, they may be hanging around town with nothing better to learn,” Alex noted.
Porter said “see if you are up for the challenge and it’s something you want to stick with.”
Owner and instructor, Sabuda added that if you start at a young age, you could have it for the rest of your life.”
The music studio began in January of 2008, offering lessons in guitar and electric bass with only two instructors, Sabuda and Seth Wochensky.
Since the studio opened, it has expanded to include Lydia Herren and Porter.
Herren teaches vocal and violin lessons and Porter teaches piano and drum lessons.
“Advancing in music, makes you advance in all aspects of life,” Porter noted.
He and Sabuda explained that people learn better in all areas of life when people use both sides of the brain.
The music studio is open to teaching all styles of music. If you’re into punk or gospel for instance, you can learn that.
“I encourage everyone to start as early as you can,” Porter said.
Porter returned to the area recently and teaches piano and drums.
Currently he has students ranging in age from 6 to 60. Porter’s 60-year-old student wanted to learn how to play gospel music for her church.
Porter’s 13-year-old student wanted to learn punk music.
“It’s not about what the teacher wants to teach,” he said, adding it’s up to the teacher to provide the student with the basics of reading music and learning how to play and then lead them in a direction that they want.
“It’s not a rigid lesson plan,” he noted.
Porter’s goal is to give back to the community and have a presence in the town. He wants to share his musical talent to helping others who want to learn how to play.
Each of the instructors have a strong background in musical talent. All are former S-GI students.
“We have a complete rock band,” said Sabuda, explaining that each of them teaches a different instrument and when combined, forms a complete rock band.
Sabuda teaches guitar and piano lessons and also the ability to sing while playing guitar.
Porter teaches piano, drums and percussion. He also teaches how to sing while playing. Lydia’s instruction is solely on voice and violin. Wochensky teaches electric bass.
“It’s never to late to start learning how to play music,” Sabuda added.
