    Deaths and Obituaries
    Kevin Jackson, age 54, died suddenly on August 29, 2009 in Bertrand Chaffee Hospital.

    Kevin grew up in Springville and graduated from Springville-Griffith Institute in 1973. He enlisted in the Army and served as an MP in Korea. After leaving the service, he made his home in North Carolina and was employed at Duke University as a 911 dispatcher.

    Kevin had many medical problems. His doctor insisted he go on disability and he decided to return to Western New York to be with his mother in the West Valley area. The move was too taxing for him, and he died the next day after his long drive and move home.

    He was the son of Lois Jackson of West Valley and the late Donald Jackson; brother of Mitchell (Patti) Jackson, Darren (Kim) Jackson and Camille (Randy) Putnam; uncle of Chris, Ben and Chase Jackson, Jacob and Clarice Putnam.

    A memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon, October 4, at 2 o’clock from the East Concord Community Church. A memorial fund for Kevin is being established at Suburban Adult Services Inc., High Hurdles Program, 360 West Maple Court, Elma, NY 14059.



    Ralph F. Mahler, September 19, 2009, of Colden. Husband of the late Kathleen M. (nee Leckie); uncle of Linda (Martin) Murphy, Paul (Sue), James (Sue), Robert (Norma) Mahler and Lisa (Robert) Sawdey; brother of the late Francis (Irene) and Peter Mahler. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock from St. Aloysius Church, Springville. The Rev. Lawrence Cobel officiated. Burial was in Colden Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Niagara Hospice.



    Laura Fritz (nee Richardson), retired first grade teacher at Griffith Institute and Central School, died September 13, 2009 at the age of 97. She was devoted to teaching her students to read. She knew the importance that reading would make in their lives. She was the mother of J. Roger Fritz of Danville, Cal., Mary Ann Fritz of Machias and Charlotte, NC, and Neal Fritz of Ridgefield, Conn.; brother of Fayette Richardson of Brooklyn, and the late C. Kihm Richardson; also survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service Will be held at the convenience of the family. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Springville League for the Handicapped, 393 North Street, Springville, NY 14141. Arrangements were made by the Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, Inc., 271 East Main Street, Springville.



    Romaine G. “Rosy” Lohrey, September 15, 2009, of Springville. Husband of Bettina A. “Betty” Lohrey (nee Maier); father of Barbara (Robert) Hintz and Judy (Mark) Dvorak; grandfather of Angela Hintz, Tamara (Mark) Peters and Jacqueline Hintz; great-grandfather of Marek Peters; brother of the late Elmer, George and Henry (late Eleanor) Lohrey; brother-in-law of Doris Lohrey. Funeral services were held Friday morning at 10 o’clock from the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 91 West Main St., Springville. Pastor Darrell T. Moen officiated. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Town of Concord. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements were made by the Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, Inc., 271 East Main Street, Springville.



    Robert J. Stromayer “Cowboy Bob,” suddenly, September 20, 2009, of West Valley, formerly of Hamburg. Husband of Judith (nee Augustyn) Stromayer; father of George and Walter (Krystal Schulze) Stromayer; grandfather of two grandchildren. Robert was an avid hunter, loved his dogs, and western collectibles. He was a member of the Cuba Gun Range, West Valley American Legion and an Army Vietnam Area Veteran. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were made by the Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, Inc. 271 East Main Street, Springville.



    Janice B. Wells, of Collins, died August 16, 2009 at Lake Shore Hospital.

    Janice was born in Springville the daughter of the late Charles and Leora Becker.

    She grew up in Springville and graduated from Griffith Institute in 1943. She later attended Rochester Institute of Technology.

    Janice began her work life at Buffalo’s Adam, Meldrum and Anderson Department Store when she was 22. She was later a secretary for New York State Representative John Pillion and at Gowanda State Hospital. In mid-life she was employed as editor of the Gowanda News and later as vice president and general manager of Buffalo Turbine Agricultural Equipment Co. In retirement, she created a multi-faceted antiques business.

    Janice was well-known in the areas of Springville, Gowanda, Collins and in the Seneca and Amish communities. She served as chairman of the Tri-County Hospital Board of Directors several times and was chair of the Red Cross Blood Drive. She held various positions on the boards of the United Way, Gowanda Chamber of Commerce, Gowanda Business and Professional Women, Gowanda Kiwanis Club and the Western NY State Cancer Society. She was named Spirit of Gowanda Community Person of the Year. She was a member of the Monday Evening Literary Club, Gowanda and Springville Historical societies, Springville Poetry Club, Western NY Doll Club and the Ephrermera Society.

    She was the wife of the late Roger Wells; mother of Virginia (Robert) Wells-Kay of Belmont NH and Nancy Wells Wierthington of South Portland, Maine; grandmother of Hallie Kay and Nathaniel Kay; sister of the late Lynette Becker Siman, Carol Becker Allen and Paul Becker; cousin of Robert and Sue Evans, Sandra Evans McVicker, Gregory and Julie Dake, Michael and Carol Becker, Fred Becker, Jerry and Mary Ellen Becker, Tom Becker, Duane and Sara Heineman, Sharon and Nick Lazarus, Larry, Christopher, Andrew and Shelly Brind’amour; sister-in-law of Katherine Wells and Richard Wells; aunt of Audrey (Ken) Wells Hubbell, Richard (Christie) Wells, Jeffery Wells and John Wells.

    A private funeral was held August 19 from the Mentley Funeral Home, Gowanda. The Rev. Soo Ho Han officiated. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery, Springville.

    A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday morning, October 3 at 9:30, from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 72 East Main St., Gowanda, with a reception to follow at the United Methodist Church, 30 North Chapel St., Gowanda. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Tri-County Memorial Hospital, 100 Memorial Drive., Gowanda or to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73123-1718.
